Magellan Straits – Fireland – Patagonia

Ever since their discovery by the Portuguese explorer, Hernando de Magallanes, in the year 1520, the Magellan Straits, which separate the mainland continent of South America from the main island of Fireland, have become steadily more popular not only as a destination, but also as a starting point, for explorers and adventurers.

The first sailing trips and expeditions conducted by Europeans to this hitherto uncharted territory encountered an entire labyrinth of canals and fjords, which continue to exert a fascination on sailors to this day.

It is the great contrasts between the expanse of the Patagonian Pampa on the mainland and in the northern part of Fireland, and the hills and forests of the south, combined with the numerous small canals, fjords and glaciers, that turn a sailing trip through this area into an unforgettable encounter with nature.
